Important Alert Concerning California Disability Insurance to Pilots Who Are Residents of California and/or Based in California

P
ilots  who live in California or who are based there are subject to payment of California State Disability Insurance (“CSDI”) and are beneficiaries of the insurance program.  The current rate is 0.9% of the first $110,902 in taxable wages. This item shows up on your pay stub as CA OASDI/EE. CASDI is a partial, short-term wage replacement insurance plan which may provide significant benefits to you under certain circumstances. It is important to recognize from the outset that you must apply for those benefits within 49 days of your date of disability.  Do not depend on anyone to remind you to apply – this is a benefit which you must claim.  The application process is set forth in detail at www.edd.ca.gov/Disability.
Regardless, we highly recommend that you personally coordinate with the Company (LAX FOA for LAX-based pilots) after making any application so that the Company is prepared to provide information relevant to your claim.  If you have difficulty getting assistance from the LAX FOA or Memphis PAC, please contact your LEC Officers. For those pilots on LTD, please be aware that the LTD Plan requires that you apply for benefits with any benefits due under the plan subject to the Plan’s offset provisions.  You should receive assistance from the LTD Plan Administrator, Aetna, but once again, there is a deadline for applying for benefits.

No one likes an additional tax they have to pay, but SDI can be a nice benefit when you become sick for a significant period of time. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your experience as we want to see this process function as smoothly as possible.

You can read more about the program at http://www.edd.ca.gov/pdf_pub_ctr/de8714c.pdf

Just a heads up:
The iOS 11 release date for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is confirmed for the fall. Apple hasn’t announced a specific release date. That being said, we would like to caution all pilots to wait on the official word from iPad Support before upgrading your company iPad. We will be testing the compatibility with company apps and officially announce when that upgrade is cleared to be installed. As always, the folks in Flight ops-iPad support are working behind the scenes to make our iPad program the best in the Airline industry. Thanks for your due diligence.
