peak and fatigue

“Fatigue makes fools of us all…” Harvey Mackay

PEAK SEASON IS UPON US AND HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO KNOW:
1. We have all experienced unplanned changes to our schedule in previous peak seasons. I expect peak 2017/winter 2018 will challenge all of us again. Operational emergencies allow all duties to be extended to FAR limits. We must remain rested and safe. CBA chapter 12.C.5.b.iv reminds us “Nothing in these paragraphs shall diminish a pilot’s responsibility to ensure that he has adequate rest prior to reporting for duty.” Please also review Chapter 12.A.8. It reminds you that you can be extended 36 hours domestically and 84 hours internationally into scheduled free time.

2. Fatigue is covered in 12.A.9. We try to get as much sleep as possible on our layovers but sometimes, we are unable to get enough sleep. From your recent LMS, you heard again along with the Association, the company wants you to call in fatigued when you are not fit to fly.

3. If you are delayed inbound to the sort and expect that you will not make your outbound flight, do not be surprised if you are still scheduled on that flight. CRS and the Duty Officer will look at reserve coverage and standby availability. You may be the best option. They may ask GOC to slide your outbound block out time to ensure you can turn.  To read more, click here.

REMINDER - DESIGNATE YOUR CASUALTY ASSISTANT LIASON (CAL)

Please remember to take a few moments and designate your Casualty Assistant Liaison (CAL). This simple process will provide a liaison between your family and FedEx in case of a tragic event. Your CAL would act as a point of contact for your family with FedEx and FDX ALPA if the need ever arises. For more information, please click here.

souly for you seeking volunteers

SOULY FOR YOU IS SEEKING VOLUNTEER PILOTS

As we've previously shared, Souly For You is our brand-new website for health in aviation. The intention of our website is to use our findings not only for our own actualization and awakening, but also as a way to serve and awake others. This service can take many forms, especially to help, heal, teach, and offer the benefits for the awakening of all. We envision this website as a one-stop shop for inspiration, guidance, and a safe place to explore health and lifestyle options through articles, online videos, and multimedia sources. In order to keep our website up-to-date and filled with the latest information, we need volunteers. Take a look at our new website and contact me at Reyne.OShaughnessy@alpa.org if you are interested in volunteering!

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE RECENT HEALTH SURVEY
We are currently compiling the results of the recent health survey and want to thank those of you who took the time to participate. The contribution that you have made was critical to the survey's success. As a result, we have learned more about our pilots from pregnancy to cancer. Please continue to read the Positive Rate each week as we will be publishing the results of the survey very soon!

Message from contract enforcement

DID YOU KNOW...
There is a new bid line adjustment (BLA) in the 2015 Agreement called "Contingency Bid Line Adjustment?" The pilot specifies a trip(s) or R-day(s) to drop only if the pilot is able to pick up a specific trip(s). The language is found in Section 25.L.3.d.

d. Contingency Bid Line Adjustment
A pilot shall have the ability to submit a "contingency BLA" whereby
the pilot specifies a trip(s) or R-day(s) to drop only if the pilot is
able to pick up a specific trip(s). The pilot must have the applicable
bank CHs sufficient to cover the trip(s) he submits to pick up. The
use of this provision shall be subject to the rules applicable to the
bank used by the pilot for the trip(s) picked up.
A BLA is a submission and the pilot's submission is granted or denied based upon uniformly applied, objective criteria. You are probably wondering what are the objective criteria and where can I find them. The definition of "Submissions" in Section 2.123 provides that submissions such as a bid line adjustments shall be "granted or denied based on uniformly applied, objective criteria." You can find the objective criteria document on the ALPA FDX site here  (note: you will have to download the "Objective Criteria Spreadsheet" after you click on the link).
2015 CBA
SECTION 2 DEFINITIONS
123.       SUBMISSIONS
a. Except as provided in b. below, submissions (e.g., for bid line adjustments)
shall be processed in the order specified in the Agreement and
shall be granted or denied based on uniformly applied, objective criteria.
The Company shall consult with the Association prior to implementation
of any new objective criteria, including any subsequent changes,
and will supply material aspects in writing.
b. No bid line adjustment submission shall be unreasonably denied; however,
with the approval of the Vice President, Flight Operations or the
System Chief Pilot, a bid line adjustment submission may be denied for
reasons other than those under item a. above. In such cases, the denial
shall be reported to the Association within 3 days and shall specify
the reasons for the denial.

If you have any CBA questions, please contact Contract Enforcement at FedEx-Enforcement@alpa.org.

iOs 11 Update
T he latest Apple iOS update 11.0.3 is available now. Due to security vulnerabilities, we recommend updating to the latest software as soon as possible.
1. From the FedEx App Catalog, update all AirWatch apps as follows:
Agent 5.5.3, Content Locker 4.9.1.
2. From Settings > General > Software Update, select iOS 11.0.3 download and install.
NOTE: In most cases, Apple requires a Wi-Fi connection for the download. Also, if your battery charge is not 70% or greater, place the device on an AC converter during installation. The process should take about 30 minutes.
