RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT
T he following retirement announcement was submitted by Captain Chris Budinsky. Chris will retire on July 25, 2018. We would like to congratulate Chris and wish him all the best as he enters retirement.
When I think back on my aviation career, it amazes me how many numbers we deal with on every flight. Thankfully, computers and iPads have made our job much easier than it was 43 years ago when I went through USAF pilot training. Reminiscing over 22+ years at FedEx, the best company in the aviation industry, I thought it appropriate to close out by the numbers with 12 being one of the most common:
  1. Preferred number of legs per day and seniority number everyone envies.
  2. Seniority in new hire class of 43 on 11/1/95 and number of iPads used concurrently for LMS.
  3. Number of landings and months required for landing currency and crew if 8+ hour Block and...digits in my Seniority number.
  4. Number of aircraft flown at FedEx and crew if 12+ hour Block.
  5. Time we most often met for dinner and average days flying/month on RA as 727 F/O my first 4 years.
  6. Number of credit hours per day and months between FAA Medicals.
  7. My favorite aircraft number, Triple 7.
  8. The 8-in-24-rule.
  9. Number of months between recurrent training events.
  10. Number of years it took to become a widebody Captain.
  11. MD I flew monthly to visit my Australian cousins in SYD from ’03-05.
  12. Number of 727 right seat slots available in my new hire class.
As important as numbers are, they pale in comparison to the men and women I have had the pleasure to fly with. Y’all are the number 1 reason I enjoyed my layovers and FedEx career in general…I salute you. As a geriatric, my only regret is that the FAA has remained obsessed with only one number in particular…65. That will inevitably change, but probably not before 7/25/2018. Adios and Vaya con Dios. Life is good today!
Cheers,
Chris Budinsky
