EUROPEAN AVIATION SAFETY AGENCY AND ALCOHOL TESTING
F or our crews operating in Europe, please be aware the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has adopted a regulation requiring random alcohol testing of crews as part of ramp inspection programs in the various EASA member states. Each EASA member may have its own standard with respect to a BAC threshold. Some EU states have a “zero tolerance” threshold. While random testing has started in some member states, the regulation will not be fully implemented until 2020. Further guidance is being developed. ALPA has urged EASA to recognize the extremely robust US testing program and consider that in its testing prioritization. Nonetheless, the testing is mandatory.

ANC COUNCIL MEETING AND FAMILY AWARENESS BBQ
L pr_anc_2.pngast Friday, MEC Chairman Capt. John Cardaci, MEC Vice Chairman Capt. Dave Chase and Negotiating Committee Chairman Capt. Pat May attended local council 79's meeting. This meeting provided an opportunity for Capt. Cardaci to brief the pilots on his "Quality of Life Initiative" and his vision for dealing with the seemingly never-ending pursuit of efficiency gains off of the backs of pilots. This intitiative will look at the broader impact of scheduling and the overall quality of the lines. It will also take advantage of what the company advertises as an "industry-leading fatigue mitigation program" to help mitigate or eliminate pairings that have been flagged by the SIG and FRMG process. Capt. Chase discussed upcoming projects occurring at the MEC level and Capt. May provided a FOCUS meeting with respect to the ongoing variable benefit pension plan project. We would like to thank Council 79 Chairman Capt. Bob Cecchi for heading up this council meeting.
pr_anc_1.pngOn Saturday, Council 79 held their annual family awareness picnic and, as usual, had an excellent turnout of pilots and their families. A special thanks is in order for FO Jade Beam and his wife Erin for their willingness to coordinate and plan all of the details of the picnic. Additionally, the picnic wouldn't have been possible without Capt. Tim Bloom and his wife Shanna opening their home and hosting the event. Please be sure and thank the Beam and Bloom families when you see them around.
From MEC Chairman Capt. John Cardaci:
I would like to thank everyone who attended Council 79’s meeting at Eagle River and those who came out to the Bloom home for the annual picnic. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with everyone and especially enjoyed hearing about fishing trips, 4-wheeling treks, snow machine races and bear hunts—and that was just what the wives were doing! What a special group you all are. Thank you for showing Dave, Pat and I such a warm welcome and such great hospitality.

The Membership Committee is seeking volunteers to serve as pilot mentors to our new hires. The intent is to assist new hires and help them successfully navigate through their probation period. We are sure that you would all agree that having a mentor available would be a great resource to them as they learn the FedEx system form. Training will be held September 18th and 19th for those interested in volunteering. Please click here to learn more and for information on how to sign up to be a mentor.
