ATTENTION FDA PILOTS: MESSAGE FROM JUMPSEAT COMMITTEE
As you know, you are entitled to a round trip business status jumpseat to wherever you want to go once each quarter. As of right now, our computer system won¹t recognize that benefit, so please be sure to call in and make your jumpseat reservation manually. You do not have to be within 72 hours of a Vips activity to use this benefit. The company IT team is working on a fix. Until then, please manually input your requests.

SAFETY ALERT: AIRLINE GUIDANCE ON SMOKE, FUMES
ALPA has issued a Safety Alert in response to a recent FAA Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) on " Procedures for Addressing Odors, Smoke and/or Fumes in Flight," which identifies a need to enhance flight crew procedures that mitigate the risk to passengers and crew in the event of odors, smoke, and/or fumes. The SAFO directs air carriers to review their procedures related to odor, smoke, and/or fume events. It suggests that air carriers should review or collaborate with others to ensure that their procedures allow the flight crew to recognize, differentiate, and mitigate the different odors, smoke, and/or fumes that can be present in the cabin or flight deck. And, it calls on airlines to "Create guidance for crews including, when appropriate, security information which can be disseminated through appropriate internal channels [e.g., Sensitive Security Information bulletins, manuals, etc.] as specific concerns are identified."
ALPA has been informed that some, if not all, U.S. Part 121 airlines are preparing to issue additional guidance to flight crews on this subject that addresses potential safety and security concerns related to smoke and fumes. The Association has asked the FAA to ensure that all Part 121 and 135 airlines make this information available to their crewmembers.
ALPA's recommendations for crewmembers:
  1. If you receive additional information from your airline regarding security-related aspects of smoke and fumes, review and follow that guidance.
  2. Review ALPA's Fume Exposure Guidance webpage and the materials provided.

T hanks to your generous donations, we were able to help raise more than $50,000 in order to sponsor a Pilots for Kids/Airplane themed hospital room at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. The dedication and grand opening for the new room will be held on Friday, May 18th. All pilots are invited and spouses and children are welcome. If you would like to attend, please plan to meet in the lobby of the hospital (2001 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis) for a reception beginning at 1100. After a couple of very brief presentations during the reception, everyone will proceed to the room for the dedication, ribbon cutting and tour.
If you are planning on attending the event, or have any questions, please contact IND Pilots for Kids coordinator Captain Dan Ferracciolo at Dan.Ferracciolo@alpa.org.

2018 pocket calendar non member information correction
Captain Al Glenn’s name is listed in 2018 pocket calendar as retiring in 2018 as a non-member who has not paid ALPA dues. That’s incorrect. Captain Glenn chose to remain a non-member but has voluntarily fulfilled the normal financial membership obligation while not subject to agency shop. The online version of the 2018 ALPA pocket is being edited to correct this error.
