L ast week's four-day event featured panels and discussions with aviation safety and security experts, technical and educational exhibits, recognition of outstanding pilot contributions, and more.
Several of our own FedEx pilots participated in and served as subject matter experts on various topics including, but not limited to, safety, security, jumpseat and dangerous goods.

FDX MEC Dangerous Goods Chairman Captain Scott Schwartz moderated a discusssion with government and industry experts titled "Fire in the Hold." This discussion centered around portable electronic devices powered by lithium batteries that have the potential to catch fire. Capt. Schwartz led this discussion highlighting how regulatory, policy and operational steps are being taken to mitigate the hazards. If you haven't had a chance to see the new "Check the Box" public awareness effort for lithium battery shipments launched by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), we encourage you to read more here.
Additionally, FDX MEC Legislative Affairs Chairman Captain Bill Secord gave a presentation highlighting ALPA's efforts to combat a provision in the FAA Reauthorization Bill to remove pilots out of the cockpit and develop a program of single-piloted commercial operations. This bill is currently under consideration by the Senate. ALPA is prepared to use every resource available to see that this dangerous provision is not enacted into law. During last week's forum, ALPA President Captain Tim Canoll announced an alliance to collectively fight this effort to weaken the safety of the airline industry. ALPA is joined by members of the Allied Pilots Association, the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations, the Independent Pilots Association, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the NetJets Association of Shared Aircraft Pilots, and the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association to fight a reckless bid to remove pilots from the cockpit.

Finally, FDX MEC Block 11 Seniority Representative and former MEC Jumpseat Chairman Captain Rich Odbert moderated a discussion panel regarding flight deck access post 9/11. Former FDX MEC Chairman Captain David Webb (retired) joined this panel and offered insight from his previous experience as well. This panel explored the development of jumpseat protections and improvements that have been instituted in the post-9/11 era. The panel also examined the future outlook for ensuring that the jumpseat continues to be safe, secure and available into the future.

NON-REFUNDABLE AIRLINE TICKETS
I t is our understanding that in June and July some pilots (fewer than 100) had Lufthansa (LH) flights incorrectly purchased as non-refundable due to an incorrect code entered by LH. Global Travel cancelled all non-refundable tickets that had not been used and re-issued them as fully refundable. If a LH ticket had already been used, Crew Audit may have disallowed the ticket on your expense reports prior to being aware of the issue. If you had a LH ticket purchased in June or July on your expense report and it was denied due to it being a non-refundable ticket, file a discrepancy and the issue will be reviewed and corrected.
The discrepancy process is as follows: if the deadhead is in your travel bank, click “file a discrepancy;” submit the tickets to the expense report as either “other scheduled” or “other deviation;” “N/A” as the trip #; select “adjust scheduled fare,” then in this box enter the deadhead value plus the non- refundable ticket amount. In the comment box indicate “the discrepancy is to increase the deviation bank to cover the ticket listed incorrectly as non- refundable.” The discrepancy will then be reviewed for approval.
