Chairman's Message: Memorial Day - 5/24/19

Several years ago, while on layover in Philadelphia, I wandered over to Washington Square. Inscribed on the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier are these words, "Beneath this stone rests a soldier of Washington's Army who died to give you liberty." As I stood there in silence, I couldn't help but wonder about this man. How did his loss impact his family and community? How much harder did their lives become in what was already a difficult time to be alive? How great was his faith in the future of this concept of self-governance that he was willing to die to protect it?

So many freedoms we enjoy today were paid for, in part, by this man and many hundreds of thousands of men and women like him who valued freedom more than their own safety. We owe them a debt that can never be repaid.

This Memorial Day weekend won't you please take a few minutes to reflect with gratitude the selflessness these men and women who died in service to America displayed? Remember also their families who lost so much. Our lives are richer because of their gift. It is a privilege to live in their shadow.
