FDA Education Reimbursement Information - 8/10/16

August 10, 2016

Fellow FDA Pilots:

As you may be aware, the Negotiating Committee has been in discussion with the Company regarding a variety of implementation issues. Included in those discussions, FDA specific items have been brought forward by the respective block representatives and are being discussed under the FDA LOA ongoing implementation measure provision.

Specifically, we have been asked to review tuition reimbursements and the German tax benefit known as Kindergeld. Prior to this, a few reimbursement claims from pilots had been viewed by the company as potentially beyond the scope of “education reimbursements.” Those claims could have already been denied but the company chose to place those on hold while we are in discussion on that very issue. This was a unilateral decision by the company, not in consultation with ALPA. Unfortunately, what occurred was that a number of routine claims with private tuition reimbursements were also inadvertently held up. When we became aware of that, we immediately requested those claims be processed. That occurred yesterday and those reimbursements will not be delayed further.

We appreciate the feedback and input from the crewmembers that were affected by this and understand how disruptive this could have become. For those pilots who still have education reimbursements on hold, I ask for your continued patience and understanding. I’m confident that we will have resolution on the remaining issues shortly. The FDA tuition reimbursement process and Kindergeld issue is the top item on our agenda for next week’s meeting.

Fraternally,

Captain Patrick May
Negotiating Committee Chairman
