LEC 100 Updates
The base stands strong with 126 pilots. Although the base seniority is obvious, I was surprised to find that 45% of our pilots would be in Block 1 or 2 if in Memphis.
LEC VICE CHAIRMAN ELECTION
You should have received an email with voting instructions for our Vice Chairman position. A big thanks to our nominees Captains Jeff Belt and Mark Wynn for volunteering. The election is currently open and will run until 1000 on 10Sep. Pay special attention to the remark about voting electronically—once your vote is cast, YOU CANNOT CHANGE IT.
MEC QUARTERLY MEETING/VICE CHAIRMAN ELECTION
August 13-17 was our quarterly meeting in Memphis. We had five excellent candidates for MEC Vice Chairman and ultimately Captain Dave Chase was elected.
FAA REAUTHORIZATION BILL/CARGO SECTION 744
Section 744 was quietly inserted into the House of Representatives bill. This section calls for a government-funded study into the feasibility of single-piloted commercial cargo aircraft. This section is not currently in the Senate bill. This is a direct affront to our profession and our CBA. Two pilots in the cockpit are essential for safety and security. Management has stated openly that they are interested in remotely-piloted vehicles.  A Call to Action has been issued and to date only 30% of FedEx pilots have responded. Please take 30 seconds to participate by clicking here.
SECONDARY LINE GENERATOR
Contract Enforcement gets more complaints about the SLG than anything else. Reserve lines in the bidpack have been reduced both as a result of the SLG, which allows up to 20% of “known reserve days” to be withheld from the bidpack, and a Company decision to decrease the amount of reserves system wide. This and the general dissatisfaction with the SLG have made secondary lines the most junior lines in every base. Be sure to complete an INSITE report to document any issues and copy Stacey.Stewart@alpa.org and me with the details (ALPA does not automatically get copies of INSITEs).
SLG and VIPS do not communicate well, so as a result, a few important notes to realize if you are awarded a secondary line:
  • You must elect to retain/waive vacation buffers both in VIPS Bid Processing and in the SLG
  • Trips and R-days may display in the SLG and not in VIPS Open Time – SLG is the most accurate and should be used solely when making preferences
FATIGUE
We fly some of the toughest, most fatiguing trips in the industry, yet we get far less fatigue calls than industry average. Remember, you need not call in fatigued to write a fatigue report. “No report, no problem.” Please send us a copy of your fatigue report to Stacey.Stewart@alpa.org.
ALPA BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
In October, I’ll be attending the ALPA BOD in Washington, D.C. where our own Captain Joe DePete is running for ALPA President. As you know, the MEC voted in April to endorse Captain DePete in this endeavor. In addition, we will be electing a new FDX Executive Vice President to replace outgoing Captain Russ Sklenka.
RETIREMENT AND INSURANCE SEMINAR
The R&I seminar for LAX will be on Sunday, Oct 21. Only one in LAX this year and location is TBD, but it will be near the airport. We will combine the seminar with a council meeting that day. As always, spouses are invited.
TEXTCASTER
Last week, there was a shooting near one of our layover hotels in Jacksonville. Fortunately we had no crews there at the time. The first time I heard about the shooting was from a text from the ALPA TextCaster alert system. Sign up takes only a few seconds and you can opt to receive important messages including reminders of bid closings, security incidents and multiple other items. Sign up here.
